Back Pain Physiotherapy at Home

Back pain affects almost everything you do in a day, from getting out of bed to sitting at a desk to lifting. PIMOTION assesses and manages back pain in your own home in Phuket, within the scope of physiotherapy practice.

Understanding back pain

Back pain has several possible sources: overloaded muscles and tendons, sustained postures that leave some muscles tight and others weak, and restrictions in the joints of the spine. Assessment therefore starts by finding which postures and activities the symptoms track with.

Rest alone is often not enough. Returning to the same activities with the same movement patterns leaves the symptoms free to return, so the programme addresses both short-term relief and longer-term movement habits.

Where signs suggest a medical review is needed first — progressive numbness or weakness, changes in bladder or bowel control, or severe pain following an accident — the therapist will advise seeing a doctor before starting an exercise programme.

Symptoms clients commonly describe

If any of these apply, a physiotherapy assessment can identify which movement patterns the symptoms relate to.

  • Lower back pain after sitting or standing for long periods
  • Marked pain or stiffness first thing in the morning
  • Pain spreading into the hip or leg when bending or twisting
  • Increased pain after lifting, or a loss of confidence in lifting at all
  • A back too stiff to bend down for objects or to put shoes on
  • Recurring episodes of back pain, with a wish to reduce how often they return

How assessment and care work

Every plan starts from an individual assessment. No two clients receive the same off-the-shelf programme.

History and trigger identification

Questions about the character and timing of symptoms, what makes them better or worse, and the activities you want to return to.

Movement and strength examination

Assessment of spinal range of movement, hip and thigh flexibility, trunk and core strength, and postural control.

Early symptom management

Physiotherapy techniques matched to the assessment findings, so that moving becomes more comfortable before heavier training begins.

Strength and control training

Work on the muscles that support the spine, alongside better patterns for standing up, sitting, lifting and bending.

Environment and routine adjustments

Practical changes to your desk, bed and lifting technique at home, matched to what you actually do each day.

Review and progression

Progress is reviewed at each visit and the exercises are adjusted as the symptoms change.

What each visit includes

Each visit runs approximately 60 minutes and covers the following.

  • A structured assessment of back pain and movement
  • A care plan and goals agreed together
  • A supervised session with the physical therapist
  • A home exercise programme with sets and frequency explained
  • Advice on posture at work and through daily routines
  • Review and adjustment of the plan at the next visit

Common questions about back pain

Do I need an X-ray before physiotherapy?

Not always. A physiotherapy assessment relies mainly on history taking and physical examination. If the findings suggest medical imaging would add something useful, you will be advised to consult a doctor.

How many visits before I notice a difference?

That depends on the cause, how long the symptoms have been present, and how consistently the home exercises are done. Progress is usually reviewed together after a few visits and the plan adjusted to what has actually happened.

Can I keep exercising while symptoms persist?

Usually yes, but the type and intensity need to suit the current stage. The therapist will identify which activities can continue and which are better paused for now.

Is back pain from desk work the same as office syndrome?

They overlap. Office syndrome usually also covers the neck, shoulders and upper back. If your main symptoms are in the neck and shoulders, see the office syndrome physiotherapy page for more detail.
