Knee Pain Physiotherapy at Home

Knee pain turns basic activities — standing up from a chair, taking the stairs, walking any distance — into things you plan before doing. Assessing at home means the stairs and chairs you actually use are part of the session.

Understanding knee pain

Knee pain involves several factors at once: thigh muscle strength, how the hip and ankle are working, the load going through the joint, and movement patterns in daily routines. Care therefore looks well beyond the knee itself.

People with knee osteoarthritis, sports injuries, and those recovering after knee surgery have different goals and different restrictions. The programme is matched to the stage of the condition and to the instructions of the medical team.

Training at home means rehearsing on the real stairs, the real bed and the real chair you have to use — a clearer measure of progress than practising in a simulated space.

Symptoms clients commonly describe

These symptoms indicate that movement and strength around the knee are worth assessing.

  • Knee pain when rising from a chair or from the floor
  • Pain or a sense of instability going up and down stairs
  • Stiffness after sitting for a while or first thing in the morning
  • Swelling, or noises in the joint during movement
  • Walking shorter distances than before because of pain
  • Recovering after knee surgery and wanting to continue rehabilitation at home

How assessment and care work

Training load increases one step at a time, with how the knee responds afterwards setting the pace.

Assessment of symptoms and stage

History taking, examination of knee range of movement, swelling and weight-bearing capacity, alongside a review of any instructions from your doctor.

Strength and balance examination

Assessment of the front and back thigh muscles, the hip muscles, and balance while standing on one leg.

Managing pain and movement restriction

Physiotherapy techniques matched to the stage of the condition, improving knee movement before training load increases.

Progressive strength training

Load is added one level at a time, within what the knee tolerates, with symptoms after each session monitored throughout.

Practising real activities at home

Sit-to-stand, stairs and walking over the distances you actually need, with walking aids considered where appropriate.

Home programme and review

Exercises you can continue independently, with progress reassessed to adjust the plan at the next visit.

What each visit includes

Each visit runs approximately 60 minutes and covers the following.

  • Assessment of the knee, weight bearing and walking
  • Examination of leg and hip muscle strength
  • A supervised session with the physical therapist
  • Practice of real activities such as sit-to-stand and stairs at home
  • A home exercise programme with sets and frequency explained
  • Review and adjustment of the plan at the next visit

Common questions about knee pain

Should I rest a painful knee or keep it moving?

It depends on the stage. During a highly irritable phase, activities that provoke symptoms may need reducing temporarily, but staying still too long weakens the muscles around the knee. The therapist will set an appropriate activity level for each stage.

When can home physiotherapy start after knee surgery?

That is led by your surgeon's instructions. Once you have been cleared to continue rehabilitation at home, the plan is built around the restrictions and goals your medical team has set.

Is special equipment needed?

Anything required for assessment and training is brought by the therapist. The ongoing programme is designed around what you already have at home, such as a stable chair and your stairs.

What can physiotherapy do for knee osteoarthritis?

The aims are to reduce pain during activity, build strength in the muscles around the joint, and restore confidence in the daily activities that matter to you — without promising any specific outcome.
